Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
This was made known publicly in an address delivered by the Rector of the College, Prof. Richard Adanu, at the 18th Annual General and Scientific Meeting (AGSM) of the College in Accra on 8th December, 2021.
“It is my pleasure to inform you that we have had favourable discussions with a number of Universities in the country and have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to establish joint Fellowship-PhD programmes and joint Membership-MPhil programmes for trainees who wish to pursue such programmes.”
In his remarks, Prof. Adanu highlighted that contemporary changes in the academic terrain have led to increasing demands to make it possible for trainees who wish to have additional qualifications such as Masters and PhD degrees to be able to pursue this during their Membership and Fellowship training.
Consideration of these demands led our Council to set up a committee to explore these possibilities.
To ensure that our curricula meet the global standards for such programmes, we have started a curriculum review process. He indicated that the College intends for this review process to result in detailed curricula for each of our Faculties which would highlight the academic, clinical and research aspects of our training.
In a speech read by the Guest of Honour, Prof. Christian Agyare, Provost of College of Health Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, he said, the two institutions have put in place various mechanisms and strategies including the setting up of steering/implementation committee to ensure the implementation of the tenants of the MOU. For instance, your Members who are undergoing their Fellowship training and are part of the programme can conduct their research work with a team of supervisors from both the University and the College.
“We believe, with this initiative, we can produce Fellows and Members with relevant PhD and MPhil degrees to help them in the training of medical students, at both pre-clinical and clinical level, and also for the training of allied health students in the various universities in the country”.
According to Prof. Agyare, the partnership between these two sister institutions, the conduct of research in the health sector, teaching and training of medical and allied students will experience significant changes, improvements and innovations, which will go a long way to improve the quality of graduates, professionals, and specialists that we will be producing in the next couple of years.
