Psychiatry

Overview

Psychiatric problems are common amongst patients seen in all branches of medicine. Epidemiological studies in many countries show that a large proportion of the society has one diagnosable psychiatric problem or another. In Ghana the WHO estimates for 2005 were that 10% of the population suffer from one form or the other of mental illness with 650,000 suffering from a major psychiatric illness. A 2009 study indicated that 41% of Ghanaians have psychological distress, 19% being moderate to severe, enough to be considered mental illness.

The programme aims at producing a specialist or consultant-eligible in psychiatry to serve the needs of the country.
