The World Scientist and University Rankings for the year 2021, has enlisted in order of numerical relevance, 50 Ghanaian lecturers whose work in scientific research and teaching in their respective universities have been impactful in Ghana. The list is an offshoot of a longer list which comprises of 706,043 scientists/lecturers from 187 countries worldwide, out of which 627 entrants are Ghanaians. This longer list also reflects the good of individual contribution to science and universities globally; a purpose that is the defining mark of the work of The World Scientist and University Rankings.
The top 50 scientists in Ghana from this ranking include 25 lecturers from the University of Ghana, 9 from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and 7 from the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho. The remaining entrants to this list are lecturers from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana Technology University College, Koforidua Technical University, Catholic University College and the Ghana Institute of Management and Technology.
In this list of accomplished scientists are three individuals who are fellows of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. They are Dr. Dwomoa Adu, Professor Fred Binka and Professor John Gyapong.
Fellows in the List
Placed at the first position in Ghana and in the University of Ghana where he lectures is Dr. Dwomoa Adu, whose area of knowledge is in the field of Medical and Health Science/Dentistry. Dr. Adu is an honorary consultant nephrologist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. His clinical research is focused on studying the activity of disease and damages in patients with lupus nephritis, vasculitis, and chronic kidney disease.
Professor Fred Binka, came in second in the country and first in the university of his lectureship: the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). He was the first Vice Chancellor of UHAS. Prof. Binka’s area of knowledge is clinical epidemiology. With over 20 years of experience from working with the Ministry of Health, Prof. Binka has to his credit, the establishment of the highly acclaimed Navrongo Health Research Centre. He also during that period set up the In-Depth Network, which is made up of 54 field sites in 24 developing countries in Asia and Africa.
At the fourth position in Ghana and third in UHAS, where he presides as the Vice-Chancellor is Prof. John Gyapong. Prof. Gyapong is a Public Health Physician and an Epidemiologist. Five years prior to becoming the Vice-Chancellor at UHAS, he was the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research Innovation and Development and Professor in Epidemiology and Disease Control at the University of Ghana. He was also the Director of Research and Development of the Ghana Health Services for 12 years where he was responsible for health systems and implementation research.
The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons is proud of the achievements of these fellows and congratulates them on attaining this feat. The College is confident that this will motivate other fellows to greater heights in their respective fields of endeavour.
