GCPS and Royal College Of Pathologists Learning Resources Launched

The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) in partnership with the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) have collaborated to the development of learning resources for medical training. Funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), the learning resources is described by a series of 24 video-based lectures purposed to support the training of residents, pathologist and scientists worldwide. The lectures cover four specialties – histopathology (anatomical pathology), chemical pathology, haematology and microbiology – and a range of topics. Officially launched on the 20th May, 2022, by a virtual meeting conducted on zoom, the lecture videos can be accessed on the website of the Royal College of Pathology.

Present at the meeting was Prof. Mike Osborn President (RCPath), Prof Richard Adanu, Rector (GCPS), Dr. John Nkrumah Mills, President (GCPS), Kelley Price International Projects Officer (RCPath), Dr. Justina Ansah, Chairperson, Faculty of Lab Medicine (GCPS) and Joanne Brinklow, Director of Learning (RCPath).

In his opening remarks, Prof. Mike Osborn highlighted the experience of the collaboration and the prospects of its benefits to postgraduate medical training. “It is a great honour to be invited to work with you on this and this is something the Royal College has really enjoyed doing…” “I am really pleased that the Tropical Health Education Trust asked us to be involved in this honour health work partnership. It is a really good collaborative opportunity to support your Residents continued professional development.

Dr. John Nkrumah also shared similar sentiment, intimating that the college has in times past engaged in collaborative projects for the purpose of providing resources for Residents. For him, this project signified the peak of such endeavours and he was delighted at the results. This was ensued with a demonstration of how the videos could be accessed on the RCPath webpage.

Professor Adanu at the closing of the meeting remarked firstly, gratitude to all the College personnel who had been involved in the project, and then on behalf of the College, to the Royal College of Pathology and the Ministry of Health, Ghana. He expressed the hope that the success of the collaboration would draw in more support to help expand the scope of the project to benefit other faculties and institutions.
