GCPS Grants Accreditation for Residency Training in Emergency Medicine to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

This makes the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), the second in Ghana after the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital, to receive accreditation to offer residency training in Emergency Medicine. In acknowledgment of this milestone, the teaching hospital in collaboration with The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) organized an event on 4th April, 2022 to launch the training programme. In attendance were Prof Richard Adanu, Rector of GCPS, Dr. Nkrumah Mills, President of GCPS, Prof Samuel Debrah, Vice President of Surgery, GCPS and Dr. George Oduro, Chairman of the Faulty of Emergency Medicine, GCPS.

It was outlined at the event that the first batch of trainees to undergo the training programme would sum three (3) membership residents and four (4) fellowship residents. Dr. George Oduro stated that the training was going to be very innovative and would employ in its training model, lessons in non-technical surgical skills, which focuses on the relationship between team members in patient care. Head of Accident & Emergency Department, KBTH, Dr. Frederick Kwarteng expressed delight, clarifying that prior to the accreditation, doctors at the hospital had to leave for Kumasi to receive residency training in Emergency Medicine.

“Training is based on practicality and looking at the number of cases that comes to the hospital, it is only right that we have the training here”, these were the words of Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, the Chief Executive Officer, KBTH), as he also expressed his elation at the reception of accreditation by the teaching hospital. He added that the scope of admission will extend to nurses and all other healthcare providers whose contributions are necessary to the delivery of successful healthcare in Emergency Medicine.

Prof Richard Adanu, Rector of GCPS promised that the College would additionally supplement the efforts of the teaching hospital with available qualified trainers who would provide guidance and impart the needed skills to trainees. He urged the trainees to avail themselves studiously to the programme to become the successes needed not only to facilitate the stellar delivery of Emergency Medical care but to exemplify the exceptional of the training.
