National Academy of Medicine Honours Professor Richard Adanu

Rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, Professor Richard Adanu, has been elected into the membership body of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). He forms part of the international category which comprises ten (10) members. This together with ninety-nine (99) regular members adds up to the 100 newly elected members whose election was confirmed by an announcement at the annual meeting of NAM which took place last year, 2021 in the month of October.

As a Professor of Women’s Reproductive Health at the University of Ghana, School of Public Health, Professor Adanu was awarded the title of distinction for spearheading human resource and research capacity building in Ghana.  And also, for personally engaging in South-South research capacity building in sub-Sahara Africa.

Dr. Victor Dzau, president of the National Academy of Sciences, remarked in his address to the new class of members about the unparalleled contributions of their efforts to health and medicine and its effectiveness against some of the greatest challenges of Public Health. He added that, “This is also the NAM’s most diverse class of new members to date, composed of approximately 50% women and 50% racial and ethnic minorities. This class represents many identities and experiences – all of which are absolutely necessary to address the existential threats facing humanity. I look forward to working with all of our new members in the years ahead.”

Other notable names in the international category of members include Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, regional Director for Africa, World Health Organization (WHO) and Dr. Samba Ousemane Sow, Director-general, Centre pour les Vaccins en Développement, Mali.

The National Academy of Medicine

Then known as the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 1970; the year of its establishment, the National Academy of Medicine constitutes one of the three academies that add up to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (the National Academies) in the United States of America. The National Academies are private, non-profit institutions that operate outside of government to offer advice on matters of science, health and technology.

Membership is granted to professionals who have made major advancements in the field of medical sciences, health care, and public health and as thus is widely esteemed as a mark of excellence. Election of members is results from the votes of current members of the NAM. The election is conducted annually and selects no more than ninety (90) regular members and ten (10) international members.  

The College would like to extend its congratulations to the Rector and hopes that this achievement will serve as source of inspiration to many who endeavour in the fields of medical sciences, health care, and public health.
